I built this scale model of Chartres Cathedral for Bricks by the Bay 2019. I have always enjoyed architecture and engineering. That and anything medieval. In fact, some people might be surprised to know in addition to my undergraduate degree in Politics from Princeton University, I received a Certificate in Medieval Studies. The Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages was among the things that interested me the most. So I have long thought of doing a large, full sized cathedral build.
After Bricks by the Bay 2018, I immediately began work on the cathedral. Included below some in-progress pictures. This massive build required a whole lot of grey pieces. I sorted through my entire collection to cull out all of the grey pieces that I would need. That itself took several weekends and many hours, as I estimate my entire collection LEGO bricks to exceed a quarter million bricks.
During the convention, we noticed the folks from one of our favorite YouTube channels, "Beyond the Brick," were in attendance and interviewing different builders. My son Diego had the gumption to go approach them and tell them that they had to see his dad's creation, which they promptly did. And I was glad he did, it was so fun to be interviewed by them and to be featured on their channel, where thousands of people got to see it. Most amazing were comments shared by quite a few people in France who so graciously expressed how much they liked it. A link to the interview is below.

Another fun fact, the person who interviewed me for the "Beyond the Brick" channel was Boone Langston, who was one of the stars of the "LEGO Masters" tv show on FOX. Boone and Mark were some of our favorite builders, along with Flynn and Richard who are members of our Bay Area LEGO club, BayLUG. We rooted for them all.
